right—meow:

@scriptingsouls and I were discussing how well Episode 4 of Free! Dive to the Future portrayed just how strong of a swimmer Makoto is.

The fact he is out of season and hasn’t been undergoing daily practices, in yet was STILL able to keep up with Hiyori, a collegiate swimmer, just goes to show how much talent and genuine love Makoto carries for swimming.

Not to mention the fact that Hiyori–who up to this point has continued to be standoffish and cold towards Ikuya’s middle school team–verbally acknowledged that Makoto proved to be a good swimmer given he held his own against him.

Seeing Makoto perform well reminded me of in Season 2, when Rin asked Makoto what his future plans were, because he genuinely believed Makoto had the skill and potential to continue with his swimming career after high school.

And based off of Makoto’s shocked response, and the close up on the way his eyes widened in surprise, the audience can see that Makoto has a tendency to sell himself short, and not realize the true depths of his own potential.

That being said, regardless of whether Makoto chooses to return to competitive swimming, or solely continues to pursue a path of coaching others, Episode 4 once again reminded us as the audience of just how talented Makoto is in the water, and that he truly has great potential.
